We have had one or two enquiries already from patients concerned about interruptions to drug supplies as a result of Brexit and the potential for ‘no deal’ in March 2019 when Britain is due to leave the EU. On 23rd August the Secretary of State for Health issued guidance in this regard, so we are sharing this with you. The full text of his letter is here . It requires us to ‘ advise patients that the Government has plans in place to ensure a continued supply of medicines to patients from the moment we leave the EU’ and states that ‘patients will not need to and should not seek to store additional medicines at home’. It goes on to state that ‘there is no need for surgeries to issue longer prescriptions’ and that any over-ordering will be ‘investigated’. We therefore are not in a position to issue any additional supplies of medication to patients on the grounds of Brexit. Obviously as a GP Practice we have no role in influencing the policy or preparations of Government in relation to exiting the EU and must act on the advice / instructions we are given by those who have that responsibility. If patients have any queries or concerns in this regard we would urge them to raise these directly with their MP or the Department of Health rather than through us.
